Crewe Hall Concert – 10/09/2010

This year the finalists of the Young Composer of the Year competition were invited to our concert at Crewe Hall on September 10th. Despite his busy schedule our M.P. Mr Edward Timpson was able to come and present the awards to the winners, and also enjoy the concert given by some of the most talented of our young musicians.

As usual the competition was divided into Junior and Senior sections. The judges this year were Mr Ian Raisbeck, composer in residence at Lions Brass band, Mr Colin Bayliss, Manchester based composer and chairman of the North West Composer’s Association, and SCYM organiser and member of the NWCA, David Ketley.

All the judges agreed that there was a clear winner in the junior section, and we were delighted and somewhat surprised that although the winner lived a considerable distance away, he and his family travelled up from Hampshire to be able to receive the trophy in person. The winner was Toby Roe, an 11 year old from Fareham with a piece for trombone quartet called "Setting Sail". Toby started composing at the age of 9 and is completely self-taught but has already written for brass instruments as well as for the Piano. The piece was a worthy winner, and Mr Timpson presented him with a trophy plus a cheque for £50.

The senior section was a difficult decision and the finalists were Madeleine Shackleton (a previous winner of the junior prize), Laura Stubbs, Katherine Blumer, Jessica Adams, and David Lee. All five pieces were excellent pieces of work, but after a lot of deliberation it was decided to award the prize to Laura Stubbs for her piece "picturesque". Laura received a trophy and a cheque for £75.

A special award was made for the best first composition, and this was won by Katherine Blumer for her piece entitled "The Cat". Mr Timpson presented her with her award and a £20 voucher from Merben Music.

The evening was a resounding success, and performers and audience alike enjoyed a wonderful night of music and celebration.
