SCYM Christmas Concert at Hough Village Hall
Our Christmas concert at Hough Village Hall was given a little earlier in the month than in previous years, but proved to be an absolute sell-out! No less than twenty performers with ages ranging from 9 to 19 years of age played and sang to the delight of the packed audience, and included many new performers for SCYM.

We were delighted that a group from Wolstanton High school played as a brilliant Flute Quartet, and helped by their teacher Catherine Gibson, also performed a wonderful Bassoon trio! Once again Julie Croft helped by daughters Sarah and Zoe looked after the refreshments, and Dave Dawson was persuaded to take charge of the C D player, (and help in the kitchen!).

A great night was had by both players and audience alike, and almost £300 was raised to add to SCYM funds.

Capesthorne Hall 2011
This year SCYM was invited to play at the Capesthorne Christmas Fair on both Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, 25th and 26th of November.

Five of our regular performers played as a group on Friday evening, and were joined on the Saturday by Laura Stubbs, dashing in from Leeds, plus David Lee and Beth Taylor, both of whom were making their first appearance at the event. Jessica Adams, Lois Wylie, Katherine Blumer and Zoe Van Cauter all played on both days, so a big thanks to them and also their supportive parents for taking them and their families a not inconsiderable journey each day. The Cellist on Friday was Catherine Turner.

NOVEMBER 2011

Donation to SCYM by The Cheshire Constabulary

(L to R), Lois Wylie, Zoe van Cauter, (Alex Leigh presenting on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary and David Ketley) David and Rachel Lee, all members of SCYM.

Once again the Cheshire Constabulary Police property fund has presented SCYM with a cheque for £250, many thanks to D.C. Alex Leigh, who as a past performer with SCYM was kind enough to apply on our behalf and who came to present the cheque.

The presentation took place at Merben music in Crewe, and four of our regular young performers came along to support the event. So thanks to Lois Wylie, Zoe van Cauter, David Lee and Rachel Lee.

The cheque was presented to David Ketley and we would like to give a big "thank you" to Ian Lee for taking the photographs, and particularly to Jamie Meredith at Merben Music for letting us completely rearrange his shop!

MAY 2011

Congratulations to Tom Seals!
All at SCYM would like to congratulate Tom Seals on being accepted by the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, (LIPA), and he will start his course there later this year. LIPA is one of the finest performing arts establishments in the world, and was founded by Mark Featherstone-Witty and Sir Paul McCartney in 1996, and includes amongst its patrons Joan Armatrading, Sir Richard Branson, Dame Judy Dench, and Victoria Wood along with many other notable figures from various walks of life.

Tom has been a regular performer at SCYM concerts for the last 5 years, and indeed has only missed the odd one, mainly due to other commitments, and has shown his dedication by performing even when feeling "under the weather". It has been fascinating to watch his playing and performing skills develop during that time, along with the development of his own style of piano playing and performing which clearly went down well at his audition at Liverpool!

So it is a big "well done" to Tom, (LIPA is an extremely prestigious establishment, many more are rejected than accepted), and we all wish him every success and hope that he enjoys the next few years and that at the end of that time he will emerge as a complete musician and performer.

MARCH 2011

Shavington Concert Date Now Confirmed
The date for the fund-raising concert at Shavington Village Hall has now been set for Wednesday 13th of April at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 and £3 for all concessions, under 10's free, and can be pre-ordered by ringing David Ketley on 01270 569975 and will also be available on the door. We are still looking for volunteers to help with the raffle, ticket sales and refreshments. All are welcome to come and help in any way they can, the more the merrier!

All Welcome at the SCYM Fund Raising Concert
We are hoping to organise a fund-raising concert in Shavington in the not too distant future, the date and time of which will be confirmed soon. It is hoped to stage this event either just before or shortly after Easter. We would like as many young performers as possible to come along and play or sing, so all our regulars will be informed of the details as soon as possible, and if you know of any friends who can play or sing and might like to come and have a go then a little friendly persuasion might be a good idea!

More details soon ...

JANUARY 2011

Keele Concert
Thanks to the Keele concerts society SCYM was able to arrange a trip to a concert in the Wesminster theatre given by "Eclipse", a group specialising in ethnic and folk music brought up to date. The instruments included Guitars, Harps, Recorders, (including an amazing double recorder!), Percussion etc, and they were joined by a brilliant Flamenco dancer for some of the numbers. The music varied between gentle and peaceful to fast and exciting, and all the performers were quite brilliant as they switched from instrument to instrument. Lots of thanks to the Keele Concerts Society, and it was such a shame that so few of us were able to go to what was a brilliant night of music and dance.

DECEMBER 2010

SCYM Trip To Concert @ Keele 2011
We are organising a trip to a concert at Keele University in the new year for SCYM members, and there will be a limited number of places for parents too. The concert is on January 26th at 7.30pm in the Westminster Theatre at Keele, and is a performance by "Eclipse" – a group specialising in performing lively early Spanish music with a modern twist. The instruments they use include Guitars, Harp, Recorders, Viol, Theorbo and Percussion, plus there is a guest appearance of a Flamenco dancer. It should be a great evening of music and dance, and is a rare opportunity to hear such a talented group playing rarely heard music. There will be no charge for SCYM performers, and we will ask for donations (minimum £5) from adults towards the cost of the mini bus. Please contact David Ketley on 01270 569975 as soon as possible if you would like to come with us, and details of pick-up times will be sent out a week or so before the concert.

2010 Christmas Concert
The SCYM annual Christmas concert at Hough Village Hall took place on December 10th, and although a number of performers were unable to play due to illness, a great night of performances by young musicians and audience carol singing made it once again a great fun event much enjoyed by all. A special thanks must go to Gemma Robertson who arrived as a spectator but ended up on stage singing - much to the delight of a very appreciative audience. Refreshments were in the capable hands of Julie Croft and daughter Sarah, and all our willing helpers worked hard to make it a truly festive occasion.

A letter of Thanks from Pat Adams
Along with Jessica I would like to thank SCYM for the most generous donation of £500 towards Jessica's new Flute. It was a shock to pay such an incredible amount for an instrument, but with your help we were able to fund it. A very big thank you to all at SCYM but an even bigger thank you to Mr David Ketley for all his hard work and effort he puts in for all young musicians around the area. He saw the potential with Jessica and her playing and gave her the opportunity to develop, and for this we both want to say a very big "THANK YOU".

Jessica Adams Cash Award
We are delighted to report that SCYM has given Jessica Adams a donation of £500 towards the cost of her superb new Flute. Jessica has been a regular performer at SCYM concerts over the past four years, and during this time she has developed into a player of the highest standard, and clearly has reached the point where a top quality Flute is needed for her to continue to develop her obvious talents. We at SCYM are pleased to have been a part of her musical development, and we all wish her many happy hours of music - making with her new instrument.

NOVEMBER 2010

Capesthorne Hall 2010
On 27th of November members of SCYM were invited to play at the Christmas fair at Capesthorne Hall, so a small group comprising of Jessica Adams, Laura Stubbs, Zoe Van-Cauter, Katherine Blumer, plus Emma and Claire Madeley played at intervals throughout the afternoon in the beautiful Drawing Room at the Hall. The house was beautifully decorated for Christmas and many hundreds of people stopped to listen to our young musicians during the afternoon. Many thanks also to Wendy Dolby for rushing from one room to another to help with the accompaniments, and to the parents who came to support us on such a bitterly cold day.

Cheque Presentation
A cheque for £250 from the Cheshire Constabulary Police Property Fund was presented to SCYM founder David Ketley by Detective Constable Alex Leigh at Crewe Hall recently. The money comes from the sale of property which comes into police possession and no owner can be identified, the money then given to local charities. It was Alex Leigh who nominated SCYM as he is a previous member of our group, many will remember him as an excellent classical guitarist, and we are very grateful to him and to the Chief Constable for this generous donation to our funds.

OCTOBER 2010

SCYM Supporting St Luke's Hospice
A concert was given at Shavington Church Hall on the 21st of October by members of SCYM to raise funds for St Luke's Hospice. Eleven performers played and sang during the evening, including two new members, Katy Preston and Dominic Roberts (both singers), and the evening proved to be a huge success with the Hall packed to capacity. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening, and over £300 was raised for St Luke's, and a generous donation was given to SCYM by the committee from money raised by the raffle.

AUGUST 2010

Christmas Concert
The next Christmas concert has been booked for Friday the 10th of December at Hough Village Hall starting at 7pm. Tickets will be £5, Concessions £3 and under 10's free. The evening will consist of traditional carols and Christmas songs for the audience to sing along, including performances by some of our youngest musicians. Tea/coffee/non-alcoholic drinks are available to purchase on the night, including some very popular mince pies.

The Christmas Concert always proves to be a very popular event and tickets are limited. Book now by contacting David Ketley on 01270 569 975.

JULY 2010

Richmond Village
On Saturday 17th of July members of SCYM were invited to take part in the music festival at Richmond Village Nantwich. We were asked to provide background music whilst the residents had a "get together" and afternoon tea. Three of our players went along, namely Jessica Adams (Flute), Zoe Van Cauter (Clarinet), and Lois Wylie (Flute). They were accompanied by SCYM organiser David Ketley, and the group played for almost an hour and a half. The music was hugely enjoyed by all the residents, and our small group was applauded vigorously after every piece, and received a terrific ovation as we finally bid them farewell. It was a pleasure to play to such a receptive audience, and all our players thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.

Mr Edward Timpson M.P. & SCYM
We are delighted to report that Mr Edward Timpson, M.P. has confirmed that he will be presenting the awards for the Young Composer of the Year competition at our concert in Crewe Hall on September 10th, and he has also confirmed that he (and hopefully his wife), will be our special guests at our grand fund raising evening at Wrenbury Hall on November 19th. Mr Timpson has previously expressed great interest in our organisation and has said that he will help us in any way he can. SCYM is extremely grateful to him for his support.

MAY 2010

Support from Keele University
I have been in touch with Keele University and they have offered us the opportunity of attending a concert of our choice at Keele in their Autumn programme. They do have a wide range of top performers ranging from soloists to Orchestras, plus some top Jazz performers. More details later.

SCYM and the Citizenship Ceremony
Once again members of SCYM have been asked by Cheshire East Council to play at the next Citizenship Ceremony at Crewe Hall on 16th of August. This is quite an honour for us, and is an excellent way to bring SCYM and the young musicians involved to the notice of the many V.I.P's involved in the ceremony, plus a generous donation will be given to SCYM to further boost our funds.

SCYM Funding Exam Fees
We stated in our spring newsletter that we intended to help fund exam fees for as many youngsters as possible during 2010, and I am pleased to report that we have been able to pay the full exam fee for 3 young musicians this year so far, and we intend to fund many more throughout the year. So if you think that we can help you, just get in touch and discuss it with us. We always try to help whenever we can.

APRIL 2010

St George's day concert – Nantwich
Our recent St George's day concert was held in the newly refurbished Methodist Church in Nantwich on 23rd of April, which included performers of all ages and abilities as well as a guest appearance by Soprano Gemma Robertson who has been involved with SCYM for the last 4 years.

All the players and singers had a hugely enjoyable evening, and everyone was very impressed with the facilities at the Church as well as the excellent acoustics and lovely appearance of the large room.

Lots of thanks must go to Julie and Sarah Croft, plus the pupils of Wistaston primary School for providing the refreshments during the interval, and to Pat, Tracy and Charlotte who were in charge of tickets and the raffle.

MARCH 2010

Hough Village Hall Open Day
SCYM will be holding an open evening on Friday May 14th at Hough Village Hall. The evening starts at 6pm, and young musicians and their families and friends are invited to come along and play, listen, try a new instrument, or just chat and make some new friends and see how we at SCYM help young musicians in our area.

There will be some older members on hand to help, plus some professional musicians to offer advice to players and singers of any standard.

Food and drink will be available for everyone, and the evening will be very informal with some performances and lots of time to meet and chat to friends old and new. All past performers of SCYM concerts are welcome, and we would also be delighted to welcome friends and supporters of SCYM who are such an important part of our organisation.

DECEMBER 2009

Laura Stubbs
Congratulations to one of our regular performers - Laura Stubbs, who has recently passed with merit, her grade 8 exam on the Clarinet. Laura is hoping to have a career teaching music and this result is a big step forward towards fulfilling her ambition.

Waitrose Community Matters
Lots of thanks to everybody who went in to the Waitrose store in Sandbach and voted for SCYM in the October Community Matters Charity Competition. We were the outright winners and were presented with a cheque for £540. Many thanks to Waitrose too for organising this very generous scheme to help local charities.

SCYM Christmas Concert at Hough Village Hall
On Friday December 11th the final SCYM concert of the year took place at Hough Village Hall. Although there were fewer performers than last year, those who did perform more than made up for the shortage of numbers by some great playing.

Once again we were able to introduce some new young players, most of whom were very nervous, but all performed wonderfully well, and even enjoyed the experience! A big thanks to Tom Seals who literally came from his sick-bed to play then returned after his usual stylish performance back to the warmth of his bed! A big thanks to everyone who helped on the night, and to all those who have given their time freely throughout the year.

Warmingham W.I. Dec 2nd
The Warmingham W.I. invited players from SCYM to perform in their local village Hall, and a small number of our players went along and entertained the ladies in great style. Although we were few in number, the evening was a resounding success, and all our players enjoyed themselves almost as much as the good ladies of Warmingham!

NOVEMBER 2009

Crewe Hall - November 26th
We were invited to play at Crewe Hall on November 26th at an evening meal organised by Crewe Hall, and 6 of our best young musicians entertained the guests throughout the meal and treated them to some superb performances after the meal, all of which was hugely enjoyed by a small but most appreciative audience. We held a raffle for a voucher for a meal for two at the Hall which was generously donated by Crewe Hall themselves, and raised almost £100 for our funds.

Wrenbury Hall - November 20th
Our first concert at Wrenbury Hall took place on November 20th and was a resounding success. The event was organised in association with Mr Desmond Mullock at Wrenbury Hall, and included a superb meal for 140 people served in the Orangerie. All the performers were also well fed in their own private room, and were royally treated by everyone at Wrenbury. We were delighted to have as our special guest the M.P. for Crewe and Nantwich Mr Edward Timpson, who kindly agreed to present the prizes to the winners of the lucky programme draw.

SCYM at the Citizenship Awards
SCYM was asked to provide some musicians to perform at the Citizenship awards held at Crewe Hall on August 17th, both before and during the ceremony, and despite this being in the middle of the summer holiday, four of our members, - namely Jessica Adams, Laura Stubbs, Laura Moulton and Lydia Clarke were keen to perform at the event. Supported by helpers David Ketley, Tom Seals and Dave Dawson, the performances went smoothly and were much appreciated by all who attended the ceremony, particularly the organisers from the registrar's office and East Cheshire Council. A generous donation of £100 was made to SCYM funds.

JULY 2009

Nantwich Show - July 29th
This year SCYM were invited to the Nantwich show (which is largest one-day show in the country) to help entertain the crowds with a select group of our talented musicians. The weather was unfortunately exactly as predicted, (wet!) but despite the rain we were able to give four performances during the day using a large "Mornflake Oats" lorry as a stage. All performed extremely well under difficult circumstances and were supported by parents and senior members of SCYM. During the day two young volunteers went round with a collecting bucket, and managed to collect a total of £54, which was a splendid effort as they were up to their knees in mud before the day was over! We distributed hundreds of leaflets and talked to many people, and hopefully we have made some new friends and many more people aware of our existence.

Willaston Festival
The Willaston (Wirral) festival took place on 10/11/12 of July and SCYM were asked to provide some of our musicians for the festivities. We were able to help on the first two days, and Tom Seals went on the 10th to perform on the Piano in his usual inimitable style at their evening concert, and proved to be a great success. On Saturday the 11th, Jessica Adams (flute), and David Lee (Piano) played at the flower festival in Christ Church Willaston village, and performed many times during the day from 11.30am until 4.30pm. They were supported by David Ketley (who accompanied Jessica in some of her pieces), and grateful thanks must go to their families for taking them and supporting them throughout the long day.

APRIL 2009

A coach was hired for the occasion, and 30 lucky people were taken to hear a wonderful programme of music in one of the finest concert halls in Europe. Everyone enjoyed the evening, and for many of our younger members it was their first ever experience of a classical concert. Lots of thanks must go to the BBC for supporting SCYM and giving us the 12 free tickets and the 18 extras at only £3 each.

SEPTEMBER 2008

SCYM supporting Harriet Grant
One of the performers at Crewe Hall recently was Harriet Grant, a singer who has never had a singing lesson in her life! As we consider her to be very talented, SCYM has arranged for her to have lessons with Gemma Robertson, and will fund her by paying for her first ten lessons. The announcement was made after her performance, and as Harriet had no idea that this had been arranged, the look on her face was a picture!

SCYM supporting Rhianne Abberley
One of our regular performers, percussionist Rhianne Abberley recently had to return her on-loan Vibraphone to Cheshire County Council, so another one had to be found quite quickly. Fortunately one was located in London which turned out to be a perfect replacement. However as these are extremely expensive instruments, SCYM decided to help, and a cheque for £500 was presented to Rhianne during the interval at the recent concert at Crewe Hall.

Christmas Concert
CONFIRMATION ~ on the 12th December 2008 SCYM will be holding their 1st Christmas Concert at Hough Village Hall. There will be plenty of Christmas tunes to sing along to and refreshments available so make a note in your diary. We'll let you know when the tickets go on sale.

Support from the BBC Philharmonic
The BBC Philharmonic have kindly offered their continued support to SCYM with complimentary tickets to Bridgewater Hall. These tickets will be offered as a prize for some lucky individuals. We'll make further announcements soon.

Waitrose Community Matters
Waitrose in Sandbach has started a new scheme to support local good causes by donating a £1,000 to the winning nomination every month. There are 3 good causes competing every month and we hope that SCYM will be one of them in near future. So if you're in Waitrose and you have the opportunity to vote for us, we'd really appreciate your support.

Congratulations
Two of our regular performers Ian Raisbeck and Katie Smallwood tied the knot recently and SCYM would like to offer our very best wishes.

APRIL 2008

Well Done to all Competition Winners
Our furthest entry this year came from Leo Geyer who is 15 years old and is from London. Unfortunately Leo wasn't able to attend the presentation evening or the BBC with us, however he did achieve runner-up in the Senior Section, so we forwarded his runner-up cup. We also heard that he has been accepted at the Trinity College in London to study composition - so very well done.

FEBRUARY 2008

Composer Competiton Entries With The Adjudicator
The entries for the Young Composer's competition have gone to the adjudicator, and there were 3 finalists in the Junior section and 4 in the Seniors. The results will be announced at the Ruskin concert on 24th April, when it is hoped to perform the winning pieces. Entries this year came from as far away as London, and once again the standard was extremely high leaving our adjudicator, the composer Colin Bayliss a difficult task.

Birthday Bash
Thanks to Mrs Royle for inviting members of SCYM to play at a birthday party held recently at Weston Cricket Club. Rhianne Abberley, Tom Seals and SCYM founder David Ketley played as a Jazz Trio much to the delight of the guests.

DECEMBER 2007

On the 23rd December, SCYM were invited to play background music during a wedding reception at Crewe Hall. The Delta Brass Quintet took turns with Rhianne Abberley and Edgar Thompson who played a variety of instruments including violin, vibraphone, guitars, mandolin and keyboard. Mrs Nott wrote a thank you letter stating the young musicians made the afternoon very special.

NOVEMBER 2007

Tom has been asked to play in Curshaws in Nantwich on Sunday evenings, and we at SCYM are sure that this will be just the first of many invitations to entertain the public in his own distinctive style.

BBC Support
SCYM are pleased to announce that the BBC Philharmonic are supporting our young composer's competition this year, and have invited the 6 finalists plus 4 adults to be present at the Manchester studios at a recording of a programme for Radio 3 which involves interviews with eminent musicians and performances by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

Thanks
The Barthomley W.I. gave the vote of thanks, and the president, (Mrs Goodin) wrote to thank all involved. She wrote, - "may I thank you most sincerely for bringing such talented youngsters to entertain us.... the concert was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience".
